“She’s gone!” Bailey was pacing like a woman possessed.

I sat up in bed to face an agitated Bailey. “Who?”

“That bitch, Jasmine! I just got a call from Nick. She’s gone. She left his compound. Bolted like the fucking coward she is. Goddamnit, I knew she was behind this.”

Danica came in behind her. “Took her shit and left on foot. A truck came to—”

“Whoa. Slow down. What time is it?” I looked at my clock. It was just after seven a.m. “I don’t understand what the problem is. Jasmine is gone?”

“She snuck out. Didn’t say goodbye. Didn’t even use the front door.”

“Nick’s security caught her wa—”

“Wait.” I rubbed my eyes. “Jasmine has a life to lead here as well. I wasn’t expecting her to babysit Max or to stop living because the Indies are here. She’s probably at the shop.”

“Then let’s go see.” Danica looked at Bailey, who nodded.

My gaze traveled back and forth between them.

“Just what is it you think she’s done?”

Bailey sat on the edge of the bed. “You’re kidding, right?”

“Besides that.”

“Clark, Bailey tattooed her face. Her face. You don’t think she’s seriously pissed off? You don’t think she doesn’t see this as her opportunity for retribution? You don’t think—”

“We need you to read her,” Bailey interrupted. “Until you do, she can’t—”

I held my hands up in surrender. “Whoa. Let’s get our priorities straight first. I understand you think Jasmine leaving is a sign of guilt, but first, how’s Delta?”

“Sleeping. Hard.”

Tossing the covers back, I got out of bed and headed for the coffeepot. “Both of you back up a little. I need some coffee.”

They followed right behind me. “How ‘bout you get ready while we go collect Miss Jasmine?”

Pouring the dark brew, I thought about the two attacks on me. Where had Jasmine been the first time? She was with us in the back. Why would she have played a victim to that first attack? Was she just a dicey decoy or was she as bad as these two thought her to be? I had read her, yes, but not deeply. Was it possible she had managed to fool me? Had I inadvertently read one of her little ghosts, or was she just an innocent bystander?

It wasn’t appearing that way.

“She knew we were on to her.”

Stirring creamer into my coffee, I shook my head. “You guys, she’s a necromancer, not a telepath. You’re giving her way too much credit.”

Danica shook her head. “She knew something, Clark. She knew Delta was being set up—knew we’d figure it out eventually. She’s on the run from us because she knows she’s toast.”

“Yeah, E, she beat a hasty retreat under some rock, and we need to start turning over some stones.”

I shook my head. “Other than a revenge motive, do you guys have any proof of this theory? Because it seems to me—”

“Oh come on, E! Tell us you’ve at least considered that Jasmine is playing both sides!”

Setting my coffee down, I lowered my voice. “Of course I have. We’ve already discussed this, but right now, Jasmine’s play in all of this is the least of our worries.
